T-Mobile's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now receiving the November security update

T-Mobile's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now receiving the November security update

T-Mobile is currently busy rolling out a new software update for both the and the . Unfortunately this will not make either device run that update will probably arrive next year. In the meantime, however, you can take advantage of the newest security fixes. And that's exactly what the new software release for T-Mobile brings. Upon installing the update on your S7 or S7 edge, you'll be on the November 1, 2017 security patch level. As T-Mobile hasn't yet updated its support pages to reflect the availability of this update, there's no official changelog to speak of. Don't expect anything but bug fixes, however. The new build number for the Galaxy S7 is G930TUVS4BQJ2, and for the S7 edge you get G935TUVS4BQJ2. The identical strings (save for the differing phone model numbers), imply that the exact same goodies are packed in for both phones. The download size is 121.99MB for the S7, and 122.55MB for the S7 edge. If you haven't yet received the update notification, it might help to manually check for the new software by going to Settings > Software update > Download updates manually. You could get lucky.

Samsung brings Tizen 3.0 to the Gear S3 with a Value Pack update

Samsung brings Tizen 3.0 to the Gear S3 with a Value Pack update

Samsung just announced the Value Pack update that brings Tizen 3.0 to the smartwatches. It comes with plenty of new features and more user-friendly widgets. The smartwatches can now control Samsung-enabled IoT devices through Samsung Connect, including the Samsung Gear VR. The Gear S3 might not be as sporty as the Gear Sport, but Samsung introduces an improved accuracy and detailed feedback on the heart rate monitoring. There is also a nutrition management feature, reminders for drinking water and a calorie balance assistant. Gear S3 owners could easily call someone on their watch, but with Tizen 3.0 they can even add contacts. New events, alerts, and text-based location entries are also available now. The optimized UI brings widgets that allow quick access to contacts, numerous weather panels and music control of the native app or Spotify. With the new Tizen 3.0, you can also see different information depending on how fast you rotate the bezel. One fast spin brings different design options for the watch face. You can also go from a text message notification straight to the reply input. There are plenty of pre-loaded replies, and you can add some on your own through the watch.

Counterclockwise: the rise (and impending doom) of the 3.5mm audio jack

Counterclockwise: the rise (and impending doom) of the 3.5mm audio jack

The from 2001 was the first phone to have a card slot for storage and also the first to feature an MP3 player. It came with a 32MB ( byte) MMC card and a pair of stereo headphones. Unfortunately, those used a proprietary COM port to connect to the phone (as did many phones later on). The familiar 3.5mm audio jack didnt arrive on the scene until 2005 and it wasnt alone. We picked the Top 50 phones (by user interest) for each year and counted the number of audio connectors. Between 2007 and 2009 there was a brief challenge by the smaller 2.5mm jack, but that fizzled out quickly. By 2009, the 3.5mm jack had established itself as the clear winner for hooking up wired headsets. And from 2010 to 2015 all fifty of the Top 50 phones had the jack on board. It was such smooth sailing, what happened? Apple started rocking the boat, thats what. Of the top phones of 2016 exactly two lacked the old school analog jack the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. This year only 39 of the Top 50 use the formerly ubiquitous jack. We also plotted the rise of USB-C/Lightning ports. As they say correlation does not imply causation but look at that chart. And with Apple leading the way, manufacturers had plenty of excuses to drop the 3.5mm connector and reroute the headphones to the USB port. Its a pretty steep drop in popularity as you can see. At this rate, the 3.5mm jack will be gone as quickly as it came to dominate the scene. Of course, theres one thing not included in this chart the number of people using wireless headphones. Bluetooth has had several additions to enhance its normally poor audio quality and theres a rich and varied market for Bluetooth headphones. Will wired headphones be they 3.5mm or USB go extinct entirely? Certainly not, at least not until phones switch over exclusively to wireless charging. Which may never happen. As for our hero, the 3.5mm jack, things are not looking good. Between USB-C headphones and Bluetooth ones, its days may be coming to an end.

Weekly poll: OnePlus 5T, did it live up to your expectations?

Weekly poll: OnePlus 5T, did it live up to your expectations?

It seems that OnePlus has settled into a tick-tock model. Early in the year, a new model brings a new design and major new features, later on a T model launches with refinements. But did the company do enough to make the a worthy upgrade? Its great that is mostly unchanged, making the 5T one of the most affordable Snapdragon 835 flagships out there. The other late 2017 high-enders push against or even break the $1,000 barrier making wallets around the world shriek. The new 18:9 screen is strictly an improvement over the older screen. You dont get a higher pixel density, but you do get more room and a more modern look. The OnePlus 5T is roughly the same size as the previous model too, making for a more efficient use of the front. The fingerprint reader moved to the back (not an issue, we think), but from our tests it seems that the new Face Unlock might take its place as the preferred locking mechanism. Its fast and works in the dark too. Its harder to argue that the new dual camera is an outright upgrade. Maybe you wont miss the telephoto lens, but is the new 20MP f/1.7 camera really that good in the dark? You can check out for camera samples including night shots and testing the new Portrait mode (since both cameras have the same FoV, theres no cropping required). So, what do you think? A great phone at a great price or was OnePlus just too keen to jump on the 18:9 bandwagon without offering much else? And hit the comments section to talk about any upgrades you hoped for did you get them or not? Many got the wider screen they wished for, others didnt get their desired bump in battery capacity.
