AliveCor Kardiaband EKG reader is the first FDA certified medical device accessory for the Apple Watch

AliveCor Kardiaband EKG reader is the first FDA certified medical device accessory for the Apple Watch

Today the US FDA has approved the first medical device accessory for the Apple Watch range. It's a watch strap called Kardiaband, it's made by a company called AliveCor, and it serves as an EKG reader for your wrist. This is a pretty solid development, considering that EKG machines are usually only available in doctors' offices and hospitals, and are mainly used after life-threatening events. The Kardiaband, tied with AliveCor's new software feature called SmartRhythm, can give you insight into your heart rate and potentially detect abnormal heart beats and atrial fibrillation (also known as AFib). When it tells you there's an issue, you can send the readout to your doctor to get a professional opinion and hopefully prevent a heart attack or stroke in the making. To obtain an EKG reading from the Kardiaband, you just touch the sensor on the strap for 30 seconds. That's it. Technically the heart rate sensor built into the Apple Watch could do the same thing, but Apple doesn't want to put its wearable through the very long FDA approval process (which could even take a year or more). In lieu of the FDA certification, the watch itself can at most alert you that your heart rate is unusually high, but isn't allowed to provide an actual diagnosis, unlike the Kardiaband. The AliveCor Kardiaband is , but you will have to also pay a $99 annual subscription to fully unlock its functionality.

A Huawei Daydream controller strolls through the FCC

A Huawei Daydream controller strolls through the FCC

Huawei appears to be the first manufacturer to partner up with Google in creating a non-Google Daydream VR headset. This comes as a surprise as weve not heard of Huawei making such a device. We do, however, recall Huawei talking about Daydream compatibility at its Keynote at CES early this year, even before Google to all developers. So Huawei has shown special interest in the platform in the past. Since the Daydream controller uses a Bluetooth radio, an FCC filing is a must. The filing has a plethora of photos to look at, including photos of the controller's innards. The controller itself is very similar to the one that comes bundled with Google's Daydream view headset, in terms of user input: Home, Back, Vol+ and -, and a touchpad with a Select key under it. This new controller also has a trigger behind it and the overall design is slightly different on this device in that it features an ergonomic curve. Currently, the only two Huawei devices that are ready for Daydream are the and the . This is a peculiar move on Huawei's part, as both Mate 9 devices that support Daydream have QHD displays while the is only getting a FHD+ one, which is the Huawei smartphone currently . You can head to the Source link to take a look at even more photo if you so desire. |

Waze update brings 'OK Waze' voice commands, new motorcycle mode

Community-based traffic and navigation app Waze has started receiving a new update that brings some new features, including motorcycle mode, carpool lanes support, and 'OK Waze' voice commands for hands-free operation. Lets begin with the voice command support. The hot-word OK Waze activates this feature, allowing you to request useful information or even report things like accidents and traffic conditions without using your hands, effectively making your drive safer. For example, you can say the hot-word, followed by instructions like take me home or find a gas station or whats my next turn? This feature is currently only available to users in the US, UK, and Canada. Moving on, the new motorcycle mode gives you useful information shared by other motorcyclists. Not only that, it also provides routing info for narrow roads. And lastly, the update also adds support for carpool lanes, which the company claims is a first for any navigation app (the feature is only available to users in select areas the US and Canada though). These changes have started rolling out, and are available to users of both Android and iOS clients of the app.

Sony's upcoming bezelless flagship has its specs leaked

Sony's upcoming bezelless flagship has its specs leaked

Sony is rumored to finally cut the bezels of its premier smartphones next year, adhering to the biggest trend of 2017 in the mobile world. Better late than never, then. The company's first flagship 'bezelless' offering is allegedly going to have the model number H8541, and its specs have been leaked today. Through a spec sheet that's claimed to be authentic we get to know the upcoming device a little bit better. It will apparently have a 5.7 4K HDR touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 5 on top, and a 3,420 mAh battery. Interestingly, the H8541 is said to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835, which is this year's top shelf chipset but will be superseded by the 845 in 2018. The reason for Sony going with the older SoC probably has something to do with timing: the H8541 is rumored to be unveiled at MWC in February, and the Snapdragon 845 might only be available to smartphone makers that aren't Samsung a few months later. A reprise of last year's situation on this front has long been speculated, and it looks like Sony will choose to go with the 2017 chip instead of changing its release schedule. Moving on, the H8541 will sport 4GB of RAM and 64GB of UFS storage, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and IP68 water and dust resistance. It will run Android 8.0 Oreo, and is to measure 149 x 74 x 7.5 mm. Unfortunately no details about its cameras have been outed. | (in Japanese) | (in Dutch)

Panasonic unveils Eluga C with a 3-side bezel-less design and dual camera

Panasonic unveils Eluga C with a 3-side bezel-less design and dual camera

The Panasonic Eluga C flaunts a 3-side bezel-less design similar to Sharps Aquos phones and Xiaomis Mi Mix. It is not a flagship though, instead it aims for the lower segments with a price (in Taiwan) of TWD 6,000 ($200 / 170). The phone has a 5.5 screen with a screen to body ratio of 84.6%. The resolution isnt great 720p but the brightness is pretty good 450 nits. Below the screen is a fingerprint reader (0.3s unlock time) and an 8MP selfie camera. Around the back theres a dual 13MP + 5MP camera. Both it and the front camera use f/2.2 lenses. The MediaTek MT6750T chipset limits the video capture to 1080p/30 (its a relatively old 28nm chip). The memory situation is better 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. Theres a microSD slot if you need more, though it's unclear if the dual-SIM slot has a dedicated spot for it or you get to pick between more storage and second SIM. Anyway, the Panasonic Eluga C has a 3,000mAh battery and comes with a slow-ish 7.5W charger. It is currently on pre-order in case you are interested. (in Mandarin)

macOS High Sierra bug gives you root access without a password

macOS High Sierra bug gives you root access without a password

From time to time every operating system out there is revealed to have a bewildering bug or two. Today macOS has fallen victim to this custom, and as far as bugs go, this is a big one. It also unfortunately creates a huge security issue, so if you have a Mac running macOS High Sierra you should read on, for there's an easy fix you can apply yourself. First, the problem. The bug lets you or anyone with access to your computer get root (admin) access without a password. No, really. All you need to do is enter root in the username field when you log in, leave the password field blank, and then mash the Return key a few times (or click on the Login button several times). That's it, you're then instantly logged in as a 'superuser', which means you have read and write privileges on system files, including what's in other macOS accounts. Needless to say, this is bad. However, here's the quick fix you can ensure you apply until Apple patches the bug. What you need to do is set a root password. Launch a Terminal window and type sudo passwd -u root, then enter your password, and then enter a new password for the root user. Once you've done that, the bug no longer presents itself. Hopefully Apple has already taken note of this problem and is working tirelessly to fix it as soon as possible. | | |

Huawei unveils competing FaceID and Animoji tech

Huawei unveils competing FaceID and Animoji tech

Besides , Huawei also showed off some tech that its working on for future products. And they are more than a little inspired by the iPhone X. Huawei is working on its own structured light 3D sensor for the front. It will build a detailed model of your face with 300,000 points in 10 seconds. When used for unlocking, the system will trigger in 0.4 seconds (a fingerprint reader needs around 0.2s). As you can imagine, this 3D sensor will be used to unlock the phone and secure money transactions. Then there are animojis. Huawei claims to have the upper hand on Apple here as its system features more detailed tracking it can even track your tongue so you can make the animated characters look goofy if you so desire. This tech is not integrated in the Honor V10 or any of Huaweis other current devices. Perhaps it will be ready in time for the P11, but the company made no commitments to a launch time frame. Motorola Moto X4 in for review

Motorola Moto X4 in for review

The X series used to be Motorola's flagship line but they had to step down wen the Z series came to be in . The last Moto X, the , came and went in 2015, so we were really excited when we heard that Motorola was bringing the X line back in 2017. The subsequent has no flagship chipset nor flagship screen. But if you look past what the Moto X4 isn't, you'll see just how great it is. The first thing you notice when you take the Moto X4 out of its retail box is just how beautiful it is. Its shiny glass reflects the light in different ways depending on angle so you're never sure if the phone is grey or blue. The metal frame is reassuringly solid and lightly brushed. The buttons are very sturdy and ciomfortable. The screen on the front doesn't have the trendy 18:9 aspect, but it's a great 1080p IPS LCD. It's not too big, nor too small at 5.2-inches and it makes room for an LED flash above and a snappy fingerprint reader below. The phone also has IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, to give you piece of mind. The back is where the upside-down emoticon is at least that's what the camera modules and LED flash look like. It's a dual camera made up of a 12MP f/2.0 normal camera (with large 1.4m pixels) and a wide-angle 8MP shooter, a setup similar to the one on recent LG flagships. Inside the Moto X4 has a Snapdragon 630 with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM a combination that ensures smooth performance and enables 4K video recording. Here are a few samples taken with the regular and wide cameras. Our full review will delve deep into the quality of the snaps. The Motorola Moto X4 costs around 350 at the time of writing. Considering the package you're getting we'd say that's a good price. But before we can confirm that the Moto X4 is worthy of your cash we'll need to complete our detailed review. There are a few questions that need addressing, like the battery endurance from the 3,000Mah power pack. Stay tuned for that the review should pop on our homepage next week.

Counterclockwise: the fingerprint reader goes back, front, back and side to side

Counterclockwise: the fingerprint reader goes back, front, back and side to side

The was the from 2004. It had a reader at the center of its D-Pad, one of those early implementations that required you to swipe your finger across them. This was a flip phone so the distinction between front and back is a bit iffy, but were calling this one front-mounted (based on when the phone is flipped open). A few fingerprint readers appeared here and there over the years, but they were extremely rare never exceeding 4 phones per year. It wasnt until 2013 that biometric security became important in the publics consciousness. It was Apples doing, of course, the company is rarely the first but is always great at pushing new usage patterns. The was one of two phones to have a fingerprint reader that year (front-mounted), the other was the (rear mounted). The very next year, 2014, there were 33 phones brandishing a reader and the overwhelming majority of them had it on the front (29 vs. 4). But by 2016 the balance had shifted to rear-mounted readers. The showed that you can have both great screen-to-body ratio and a front-mounted reader, but we think the ergonomics dont quite work out. If the bezel-less trend persists, most readers will migrate to the back. Then there are the side-mounted readers. Pushed mostly by Sony but not exclusively ZTE, Huawei and Nexbit (now owned by Razer) had side-mounted readers in 2015, the same year that Sony launched the and co. Still, these are a relative rarity. Theres a good reason for that just as the pursuit of slim bezels pushed the fingerprint reader away from the front, its pushing it off the sides too. A side-mounted reader increases the thickness of the side bezels and in turn the phone itself, damaging usability as excessive width is detrimental to handling. Apple is trying to set a new trend now no fingerprint reader at all! The uses facial 3D scanning instead. That necessitated a notch at the top of the screen, though, and its not necessarily a good look (opinions certainly differ). For completeness sake, heres the fingerprint reader position chart from 2004 to 2014. We split it since the post-2013 boom skewed the combined chart and made it hard to read.

Google Home Mini deal will last through end of the year

One of the most popular products this holiday season without a doubt will be the Google Home Mini. It offers full Google Assistant functionality without braking the bank at its low $50 price point. This Black Friday week, a number of retailers offered a discount of $20 plus a $10 gift card. Walmart also has a deal that offers those who buy a Home Mini a $25 coupon towards a Google Express Walmart Order, effectively bringing the cost down to $5. If you missed out on the giftcard bundles, dont fret. According to , youll still be able to grab a Google Home Mini for the same discounted price of $29 as per a promotional email that customers have been receiving from Google. Although it doesnt say it on the Google Store page, the emails fine print states the following. So even if the other retailers that sell the Home Mini like Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and B stop offering the discount, the Google Store should freeze the price until 2018 arrives. Google is definitely keen to get a large amount of Google home Mini units off the shelves before the end of the year. | Google Home Mini @

iPhone X is now only 1-2 weeks behind delivery in the US

Thankfully thats no longer the case for those of you trying to snag an iPhone X in time for the holidays. Right now, Apple US and Canada offer the iPhone X with expected deliveries 1-2 weeks after placing an order. New leaked image shows the Honor V10 for real

Huawei's online-only sub-brand Honor is getting ready for a big launch event in China . That's when the is expected to be unveiled. The handset has already been ahead of its introduction, and earlier today we showed you a . If you had your doubts about that picture, you weren't alone. Thankfully though, from another source in China comes what is definitely the first real portrayal of an Honor V10 unit. What's depicted here lines up perfectly with TENAA's pictures, unlike the previously leaked image. That's why we're pretty sure this is in fact the Honor V10, the brand's first flagship offering with a tall 18:9 screen aspect ratio. The phone will come with the Kirin 970 chipset (that also powers the ), a 5.99 2,160x1,080 display, 6GB of RAM, 64 or 128GB of storage, a dual rear camera setup (16 MP + 20 MP), and a 13 MP selfie snapper. We assume that the V10 will run EMUI 8.0 with Android 8.0 Oreo underneath, but that's not a given yet. The Honor V10 will allegedly be priced at CNY 2,999 (that's about $453 or 384 at the current exchange rates). Honor is holding an event in London on December 5 where we expect the V10 to be announced (under a different name) for international markets. (in Chinese) |

OnePlus confirms it wont have Project Treble on the OnePlus 5T, heres what that means

OnePlus held an AMA about its newest device, the . One of the inquiries referred to . For those who havent heard about Project Treble it was announced several months ago as a feature of Android Oreo. In fact, all phones that shipped with Android Oreo out of the box will support this feature. Project Treble modularizes the Android Operating system so that OEM customizations stay separate from Android. The idea is that OEMs dont need to tweak the update as much to cut down on time between releasing updates. So back to OnePlus, in the AMA a fan asked if the OnePlus 5T or any other OnePlus devices will be updated to support Treble indirectly asking if any OnePlus devices will be fast-tracked for updates. OnePlus confirmed that neither the OnePlus 5T, nor any other OnePlus device, will be updated to support Treble. OEMs can update devices with Nougat 7.1 and older to support Project Treble, though this does require reworking of OEMs firmware so many of them may not bother with Treble until a future release. |

T-Mobile's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now receiving the November security update

T-Mobile's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now receiving the November security update

T-Mobile is currently busy rolling out a new software update for both the and the . Unfortunately this will not make either device run that update will probably arrive next year. In the meantime, however, you can take advantage of the newest security fixes. And that's exactly what the new software release for T-Mobile brings. Upon installing the update on your S7 or S7 edge, you'll be on the November 1, 2017 security patch level. As T-Mobile hasn't yet updated its support pages to reflect the availability of this update, there's no official changelog to speak of. Don't expect anything but bug fixes, however. The new build number for the Galaxy S7 is G930TUVS4BQJ2, and for the S7 edge you get G935TUVS4BQJ2. The identical strings (save for the differing phone model numbers), imply that the exact same goodies are packed in for both phones. The download size is 121.99MB for the S7, and 122.55MB for the S7 edge. If you haven't yet received the update notification, it might help to manually check for the new software by going to Settings > Software update > Download updates manually. You could get lucky.

Samsung brings Tizen 3.0 to the Gear S3 with a Value Pack update

Samsung brings Tizen 3.0 to the Gear S3 with a Value Pack update

Samsung just announced the Value Pack update that brings Tizen 3.0 to the smartwatches. It comes with plenty of new features and more user-friendly widgets. The smartwatches can now control Samsung-enabled IoT devices through Samsung Connect, including the Samsung Gear VR. The Gear S3 might not be as sporty as the Gear Sport, but Samsung introduces an improved accuracy and detailed feedback on the heart rate monitoring. There is also a nutrition management feature, reminders for drinking water and a calorie balance assistant. Gear S3 owners could easily call someone on their watch, but with Tizen 3.0 they can even add contacts. New events, alerts, and text-based location entries are also available now. The optimized UI brings widgets that allow quick access to contacts, numerous weather panels and music control of the native app or Spotify. With the new Tizen 3.0, you can also see different information depending on how fast you rotate the bezel. One fast spin brings different design options for the watch face. You can also go from a text message notification straight to the reply input. There are plenty of pre-loaded replies, and you can add some on your own through the watch.

Counterclockwise: the rise (and impending doom) of the 3.5mm audio jack

Counterclockwise: the rise (and impending doom) of the 3.5mm audio jack

The from 2001 was the first phone to have a card slot for storage and also the first to feature an MP3 player. It came with a 32MB ( byte) MMC card and a pair of stereo headphones. Unfortunately, those used a proprietary COM port to connect to the phone (as did many phones later on). The familiar 3.5mm audio jack didnt arrive on the scene until 2005 and it wasnt alone. We picked the Top 50 phones (by user interest) for each year and counted the number of audio connectors. Between 2007 and 2009 there was a brief challenge by the smaller 2.5mm jack, but that fizzled out quickly. By 2009, the 3.5mm jack had established itself as the clear winner for hooking up wired headsets. And from 2010 to 2015 all fifty of the Top 50 phones had the jack on board. It was such smooth sailing, what happened? Apple started rocking the boat, thats what. Of the top phones of 2016 exactly two lacked the old school analog jack the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. This year only 39 of the Top 50 use the formerly ubiquitous jack. We also plotted the rise of USB-C/Lightning ports. As they say correlation does not imply causation but look at that chart. And with Apple leading the way, manufacturers had plenty of excuses to drop the 3.5mm connector and reroute the headphones to the USB port. Its a pretty steep drop in popularity as you can see. At this rate, the 3.5mm jack will be gone as quickly as it came to dominate the scene. Of course, theres one thing not included in this chart the number of people using wireless headphones. Bluetooth has had several additions to enhance its normally poor audio quality and theres a rich and varied market for Bluetooth headphones. Will wired headphones be they 3.5mm or USB go extinct entirely? Certainly not, at least not until phones switch over exclusively to wireless charging. Which may never happen. As for our hero, the 3.5mm jack, things are not looking good. Between USB-C headphones and Bluetooth ones, its days may be coming to an end.

Weekly poll: OnePlus 5T, did it live up to your expectations?

Weekly poll: OnePlus 5T, did it live up to your expectations?

It seems that OnePlus has settled into a tick-tock model. Early in the year, a new model brings a new design and major new features, later on a T model launches with refinements. But did the company do enough to make the a worthy upgrade? Its great that is mostly unchanged, making the 5T one of the most affordable Snapdragon 835 flagships out there. The other late 2017 high-enders push against or even break the $1,000 barrier making wallets around the world shriek. The new 18:9 screen is strictly an improvement over the older screen. You dont get a higher pixel density, but you do get more room and a more modern look. The OnePlus 5T is roughly the same size as the previous model too, making for a more efficient use of the front. The fingerprint reader moved to the back (not an issue, we think), but from our tests it seems that the new Face Unlock might take its place as the preferred locking mechanism. Its fast and works in the dark too. Its harder to argue that the new dual camera is an outright upgrade. Maybe you wont miss the telephoto lens, but is the new 20MP f/1.7 camera really that good in the dark? You can check out for camera samples including night shots and testing the new Portrait mode (since both cameras have the same FoV, theres no cropping required). So, what do you think? A great phone at a great price or was OnePlus just too keen to jump on the 18:9 bandwagon without offering much else? And hit the comments section to talk about any upgrades you hoped for did you get them or not? Many got the wider screen they wished for, others didnt get their desired bump in battery capacity.
